Vintage Size & Fit Guide

Great style begins with the right fit. Whether you are choosing a vintage original, a pre-loved find, or a contemporary piece, let the garment’s measurements lead.

The label is a starting point

Sizing varies across eras, brands, and silhouettes. A vintage label is not a reliable equivalent to a modern size, and previous alterations or wear can affect fit. Use the listed garment measurements rather than a universal size conversion.

Compare with a piece you love

Choose a similar garment that fits you well. Fasten it, lay it flat on a smooth surface, and gently smooth it without stretching. Use a flexible tape and compare like with like: jeans with jeans, a blouse with a blouse, and outerwear with a layer that accommodates what you wear underneath.

Flat width and full circumference are different measurements. Double a flat bust, waist, or hip width only when comparing it with a full-circumference figure. Do not double rise, inseam, shoulder, sleeve, or garment length. If a listing does not make its measurement convention clear, ask us before ordering.

Filled pre-owned example: Paul KC Yellow & Taupe High-Low Dress

Labeled size: Small. These measurements apply only to this individual Paul KC colorblock cutout dress, not to every size Small. All measurements are supplied garment measurements in inches, not body measurements.

Size Bust Front length Back length
Small 30 inches; stretch jersey bodice 32 inches 49 inches

The dress’s measurements were supplied under flat-lay notes. The 30-inch bust is reproduced as listed, without doubling it or converting it into a width. Its flat-width versus full-circumference convention has not been confirmed for this dress. Maximum stretch, waist, and hip measurements are not available. Contact us if you need clarification before choosing your fit.

Compare with a similar high-low dress you own, checking the front and back lengths separately. The stretchy bodice does not establish a maximum bust measurement.

Filled vintage example: 1980s Gallery Down Maxi Coat

This example uses the measurements supplied in our vintage Gallery coat listing, labeled Women's Large. These figures apply to this individual coat only, not to every vintage size Large. All measurements below are in inches.

Measurement Listed coat measurement How to compare
Bust / chest 38 inches full circumference Compare with the full chest circumference of a similar coat you own. If measuring your coat flat from underarm to underarm, double that width before comparing with 38 inches. Do not double the listed 38-inch measurement.
Total length 48 inches Compare with the length of a similar coat you own, using the same measuring points.
Sleeve length 24 inches Compare shoulder seam to cuff, confirming that the listing uses the same method.
Shoulder to shoulder 16.5 inches Compare across the back between shoulder seams.
Waist / hips Not supplied Contact us if these measurements are important to your fit.

The 38-inch bust is the coat’s full circumference, not a body measurement. Allow room for movement and winter layers when comparing with a coat that fits you well.

Where to find each piece’s measurements

Check the product description for “Measurements,” “Size & Measurements,” or “Size Chart.” Match the chart row to the size you are considering. A chart may include sizes that are not currently available to select.

A little room makes the difference

Garment measurements are not body measurements. Consider the fabric’s stretch, the intended silhouette, and room for movement or layering. Measurements are approximate, not a guarantee of fit. If a measurement is missing or unclear, contact Thirteen Vintage before ordering. A considered comparison is always better than guessing from the label.
